A little background on Marlborough:

The Normans built a stronghold in Marlborough on the ancient burial mound. They also established a mint, producing silver coins in the late 11th century. Marlborough Castle was reinforced with stone in the 12th century, and was used as a Royal residence until it fell into disrepair at the end of the 14th century. 244 properties, including the Guildhall and St Mary's Church were destroyed in the Great Fire of Marlborough in 1653. There are many listed buildings in Marlborough, including the Church of St Peter & St Paul - the building is no longer used as a parish church, but is an Arts Centre.
